SLEEPY HOLLOW VINEYARD
Since it was first planted in 1972, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard has earned a reputation as one of California’s legendary winegrowing sites, consistently producing Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that have become benchmarks for excellence on the Central Coast. In fact, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard is one of only a handful of New World vineyards to have a wine honored with a rare, perfect 100-point score by Wine Spectator.
Located in the acclaimed Santa Lucia Highlands, 13 miles south of Monterey Bay, Sleepy Hollow is a stunning 565-acre hillside vineyard featuring ideal soils and exposures, and a diversity of vine age and clonal material. Sleepy Hollow’s coveted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines are planted in a variety of gravelly loam soils (including both Arroyo Seco gravelly loam and Chualar gravelly loam). These soils allow excellent root penetration, enabling the vines to pick up subsoil minerals that increase flavor complexity. Additionally, because they are sparse and well drained, they also reduce yields, creating rich, concentrated flavors in the grapes.
The vineyard’s predominately northeast and east-northeast exposures, combined with its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, further contribute to an already cool growing site. This results in an extremely long growing season, giving the grapes the luxury of more hangtime to develop greater varietal character. Vine age ranges from original self-rooted Wente clone Chardonnay planted in 1972 to relatively more recent plantings of Wente and Dijon clone Chardonnay and Dijon and Pommard clone Pinot Noir.
Grapes from this rich and diverse vineyard form the core of the Talbott portfolio, and are the source for our Talbott Sleepy Hollow, Logan and Kali Hart wines. Like Diamond T, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard is lovingly farmed with a focus on sustainable agricultural methods.
